  1. The public docks are off of Rt 103. Fm Rt 1A take Rt 103. You will go over a small bridge, onto Bragdon Island, then over another small bridge from the island to the mainland. The town docks are on your left. Parking is adequate midweek, not sure on the weekends. Haven't paddled from there, but checked it out a couple of weeks ago, and ran into Mark, Kittery Trading Post kayak dept manager. He was coming in from a paddle. Too bad I am headed to the cape for a party tomorrow, or I would go with you. Going to paddle around Falmouth MA instead. Happy paddling.
  2. If you run the straps thru the inside of the car, they can wick water in if it is raining. This happened to us last night. I am going to pull the webbing inside the car through an old bicycle tube (700 c or 27 inch) to keep the dripping near the doors. Might try running the tube right outside the car, then water will be trapped inside the bike tube.
  3. >The entrance to York harbor can be "interesting" depending >on tide and swell conditions. > >Bill >Anas Acuta...White/White, Red Trim. >Pintail...Blue/White, Black Trim. >Avocet...Quill/White, Black Trim. >Avocet...Yellow Poly >Mega Cyclone...lots of colors Thanks, Bill. The 8 foot tides around here make things interesting. We are lucky not to be in an area with only flat water. Bay of Fundy with 40 foot tides must be QUITE challenging!
  4. Found the town docks in York Harbor today. Free parking and launching, and quite scenic. Have done the cliff walk there a number of times, will be interested in seeing it from the water. While walking around, Mark, the Kayak Dept manager from Kittery Trading Post was coming off the water. He said York Harbor is very good paddling. The docks are off of Rt 103 at the York River in York Harbor. Any comments on paddling in this area? Thanks, Mario
  5. Anyone ever used Traip Academy Boat Launch in Kittery? The harbormaster in Kittery told me about it, said it is usable at low tide, and there is LOTS of free parking. The only restriction is not parking there midweek school days. Very open and available weekends and summers. Nice alternative to Pierce Island, maybe. It is at 12 Williams Ave Kittery, just across from the Naval Yard. Here is a mapquest link: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formt...ry=US&geodiff=1
  6. Ran into Tom Sunday, who is in the process of looking for a job in the area, but in the meantime, was just starting a 12 week trip along the Maine Islands, going from Kittery to Machiasport. Carolyn and I were rounding Garrish Island heading back to Portsmouth Harbor, and met Tom in very nice seas. Here is his website. http://mainetrek.com/default.aspx He is doing this paddle for Brain Tumor research, due to his sister's death by brain tumor, and a co worker's illness from the same malady. It was Tom's first day out, and apparently, though he didn't mention it, he has a peddle powered cedar strip kayak! He didn't seem to be paddling that hard, according to Carolyn. I thought he had a tail wind. If anyone wants to support him, he would appreciate it. Great way to raise funds.
  7. >When you went up Chauncy Creek did you turn left and go >under the concrete sluiceway? After your portage were you in >Braveboat harbor or were you on a beach? Did not go under the concrete sluiceway. Looks like that divides the mainland from Cutts Island. I understand now that I should have gone under the concrete sluiceway. After the portage we were on the beach. Portage was east, but fortunately only 10 minutes.
  8. photos! http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0FZsmbNu2YuXg Carolyn and I went from Odiorne to Fort Foster. The Portsmouth channel had about a 2 foot chop, and quite a breeze blowing out to sea. We had a private beach to the Portsmouth side of the public area to have lunch on. Nice sheltered spot. We then followed Chauncy Creek to circumnavigate Garrish Island. After all, they have a kayak race around Garrish, so it must go through, right. Apparently only at very high tides! Saw the launch site along Chauncy Creek, which we will certainly plan on using in the future. We ended up paddling in the marshes until we couldn't go forward any further. And it was 1/2 an hour after high tide. We ended up doing about a 10 minute portage. Used the kayak to bridge some tidal creeks, and then hit the beach. We then did our first surf launch. Picked the wrong distance out, and Carolyn caught a wave before her spray skirt was on all the way. Dump the water out of the boat, and try again. This time a little closer to the shore, then launch with skirts on. We then ran into another kayaker whose website follows. He is doing the Maine Island Trail, and had just started out from Kittery. 12 weeks of what I am sure will be a good time. Here his website, and his charity. We will sign up and pledge some money for National Brain Tumor Foundation. http://mainetrek.com/blogs/sample_weblog/default.aspx His kayak was a strip cedar kayak, and was gorgeous. According to his website it is pedal powered. He had a kayak paddle, and did not mention pedal power to us. He is up at Libby campsite in York ME tonight. Next time we will try to get our trip out with some advance notice. Mario

  10. >Dont you mean high tide is 12:21? That's what my tide chart >says? > >wish I was there >--- >deep blue over white >impex kevlar currituck Yup. Now I know how to read the tide chart from the NSPN link. Hadn't used it before. Thanks! So, low tide is 6:03, so we are NOW planning for an early morning kayak, to finish up at 1 PM or so. Anyone up for 8-9 AM at Odiorne? Karen in Atkinson, never got your number Sunday. You said you might want to paddle over here in Portsmouth with Carolyn and me.
  11. 1st post here. Had an awesome time on our first trip with the club Sunday at the Soltice Paddle. Great meeting lots of new people. Thanks again, Dan , Deb, and Jason! Carolyn and I are thinking of a day paddle around Portsmouth, Great Bay, Odiorne,.... We are pretty open to suggestions. We have done Odiorne to downtown Portsmouth a couple of times, so we were thinking of Odiorne to Rye or Odiorne north along the coast. Tomorrow Sat 6/30 low tide is 12:21PM in Portsmouth Harbor, so 11 am or so might be a good time to venture along the coast. High tide is at around 6PM. Winds are going to be west 5 to 10 knots. 2-3 foot seas. Thanks, Mario
