  1. Young, you would be correct that's the launch site. The West port side is much nicer than the Wiscasset side. http://westportisland.us/community/wright-landing http://westportisland.us/images/site/body-images/Wright_Landing_2015v1_OL.pdf With the late start it might be a good idea to bring a head lampas slack at lower hell's gate is 18:26 and we will be getting off the water around dark -Jason
  2. I am looking forward seeing everybody. Hopefully we will have the weather. If anybody wants to put a tent up in my yard space is available.
  3. NSPN used to have hats. I know that they have produced at least two different version in the past. I don't know if they still stock them.
  4. With tonights thunderstorms we are going to move this to Thursday night.
  5. Julie has one with the shorter tunnel and seems to like it.
  6. My Garmin Vivoactive HR died from salt water last week after only one year and one week. (Just past the one year warrantee). I now don't know what a good option will be, but I don't see think that I will be purchasing another Vivoactive.
  7. Julie has one and likes it (it's only been used a few times). Prudence Mark S was paddling in one last week, you might e-mail him.
  8. If weather permits the plan is to have a few of us meet at the Hodgden Island boat ramp: 350 W Barters Island Rd, Boothbay, ME 04537 A week from Tuesday at ~17:30 to mess around in boats and have some fun.
  9. Congratulations! Not a small accomplishment.
  10. We are looking at July 22nd @11AM it's going to get us off the water a bit later that I would like, but it should still be a fun day. -Jason
  11. The dates that work in June or July are: Jun 4th 8:45 Launch (not as much of a current pushing us, but manageable). June 18th 6:15 Launch (very early, people will be welcome to camp in my yard to make it an easier AM). July 2nd 7AM launch (very early, people will be welcome to camp in my yard to make it an easier AM). July 22nd 11AM launch (we need to eat a good snack before getting on the water as it will be a ~14:00 lunch, Please let me know if any of the dates work for you. Thanks -Jason
  12. Cath, I am thinking of moving the to later in the year when we might get a bigger group. it might be a longer paddle then many would like to try this early in the season. I will look for another 8 to10AM high in June or July and repost the trip. -Jason
  13. My brother purchased a new Subaru ~ two years ago and he has had nothing but problems. Mostly the clips in the seat breaking and the motor burning OIL. I have always had great luck with Honda's. In any case I hope that you end up with a car that makes you happy.
  14. My dad always wanted to build a ceder strip canoe. I inherited a number of books and plans (including 1:1 scale plan for one version of strongback). I don't know what one I will build but it's in my long term plan to build my Dads canoe.
  15. Very nice looking boat. I hope you share some additional pictures of it and possibly the story behind building it.
  16. You might check with Todd Wright as I recall he had a number of boat for his son (I think that he was paddling at 4 years old.).
  17. I would love a diesel, I am still waiting on the 2016 Tundra Diesel. http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2014/02/toyota-tundra-getting-cummins-diesel.html http://www.motortrend.com/news/build-it-your-way-2014-toyota-tundra-diesel-hybrid-is-f-v-10-or-nascar-v-8-327737/ (It's been the running joke since 2014 that it will be out in a year). At least they added 12 gallons to the gas tank. In any case a diesel kayak carrier would be great. Growing up we had a diesel suburban with a 1200 mile (32mpg x 40 gallons) range back before they started adding emissions control diesel had much better range.
  18. Janice, I hope that you feel better soon. As for car everybody has a favorite. I love my Toyota Tundra long bed double cab, for me it's easy to load and it holds all the boats camping gear I would want, it wouldn't be correct for everybody. -Jason
  19. Another vote for test driving a boat before purchasing it.
  20. THE DATE AND TIMES ARE TBD. If we have enough interest I am thinking of doing a Westport Island Circumnavigation Sat May 6th 2017. I would like to meet at the boat ramp at 09:00 and be ready to launch at 09:30. http://www.westportisland.us/Westport Map- Conservation Properties.pdf We will stop at the Tevett Country Store for lunch. ( The best lobster roll that I have found ). https://www.yelp.com/biz/trevett-country-store-trevett We have a 15:00 low tide and 17:35 slack at Lower hells gate. https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaacurrents/Predictions?id=ACT0591_1&d=2017-05-06&r=1&t=am%2Fpm&u=1&tz=LST%2FLDT&threshold=leEq&thresholdvalue= Thus we could spend a couple of hours at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens: http://www.mainegardens.org/ while we wait for the water to change direction. This will be a 20+ Mile paddle with a lot of push helping us around the island.
  21. It looks to be in the price range of Gore-Tex without the warranty. I really don't see the upside.
  22. Bring the boat to Maine, I have long arms...
  23. On a paddle from Point Judith to Block Island, Mark caught this blue just off the island. From the time it was caught to the time it was on a camp stove was ~5 minutes. It was some of the best fish I have ever had.
  24. I have a Kokatat expedition dry suit with cordura fabric for the legs.
