  3. American Canoe Association Level 3/4: Coastal Kayak/Open Water Instructor Development Workshop/Instructor Update Dates: May 7-10, 2014 Location: The IDW will be based out on Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures, Westport MA. This location provides candidates with access to a variety of coastal and open water venues within a short commute and has excellent camping 3/10 of a mile from the base. Overview: The purpose of the Level 3/4 Instructor Development Workshop is to expose candidates to a variety of teaching/coaching methods and behaviors intended to prepare them for teaching and leading in either coastal or open water environments. At its core, the L3/4 IDW is a highly student centered experience where candidates will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of teaching methods and challenge themselves in the environment while receiving feedback from both peers and the instructional staff. Areas Covered: • The Coaching/Teaching Process • Personal Skills Refinement • Teaching the Principals of Paddlesport • Teaching Navigation for Coastal/Open Water Paddlers • The ACA our National Paddlesports Body General ACA IDW Pre-Requisites: • Be 18 years or older • Be a current ACA member in good standing • Be able to independently participate in all skills, activities and rescues listed in the appropriate • ACA Certification Course Outline and Instructor Criteria documents • Be able to effectively communicate with the Instructor Trainer and other course participants • Be able to manage all personal care and mobility independently • Meet the ACA Essential Eligibility Criteria ACA L3/4 IDW Candidate Pre-requisites: While time will be spent refining personal skill and addressing a spectrum of techniques, the purpose of an IDW is not to teach candidates fundamental strokes or maneuvering skills. Therefore, candidates must be confident maneuvering, preforming rescues and managing basic incidents in either the L3 or L4 venue at the beginning of the course. If you are unclear about your level of readiness we encourage you contact a current ACA Instructor and participate in a either a L3 or L4 Coastal Kayak Skills Assessment. ACA L3/4 Update Pre-Requisites: • Meet all of the aforementioned criteria. • Teach and Report to the National Office at least two courses that meet either the L3 or L4 standard within the four year certification period. • Maintain ACA Membership and SEIC Registration annually. • Possess current First Aid and age appropriate CPR credentials. Why do we separate the IDW and ICE (Instructor Certification Exam): We believe it is unrealistic to expose candidates to potentially new concepts and content early in a course and expect unconscious competence or mastery in days or hours without adequate time for practice and application. It is equally unrealistic for assessors to perform a formal, objective examination in the context of a training course, when candidates are expected to be experimenting with new concepts, content and coaching behaviors. Instead, we prefer students to leave the IDW with new skills, ideas and a comprehensive action plan and then take time to put this new learning into practice and before attending an ICE. ICE: We will be offering a L3/4 ICE August 7-9 2014 in Maine. Instructional Staff: Carl Ladd-Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures • ACA L5 Instructor • ACA L4 CK OW Instructor Trainer • ACA L4 Surf Kayak Instructor Trainer • Wilderness First Aid Todd A Johnstone-Wright-Saint Michael's College Wilderness Program • ACA L5 CK AOW Instructor Trainer • BCU Level 5 Coach Sea • ACA L4 CK OW Instructor Trainer Educator • ACA L4 Whitewater Kayak Instructor • ACA L4 Surf Kayak Instructor • Wilderness EMT/Educator • Registered Maine Guide Additional Information/Registration: For additional information or registration materials please contact Carl or Samantha Ladd at Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures at westport@ospreyseakayak.com or call (508) 636-0300.

  12. If you do more distance paddling the 167 might be your best choice, if you like to play more in swells, surf and rock gardens the 163 would be the best choice as it tends to be a bit more agile.
  13. Yes I Fab them myself and use all the original hardware. I am very happy with the results.
  14. Hi, Carl from Osprey,I can replace it for you, with a plexi skeg that won't bend. you can contact me by email cnsladd@cox.net. The replacement cost is $35.00.
  15. Adam, It is a good solid boat. The only repairs I have done to them have been cosmetic. The construction is solid, the design is great, a good open water boat. I have put the 17 through pretty big seas and it performed quite well.
