  1. Does anyone have local knowledge on the status of Essex River Race? It seems the long tradition of a May race day has been held up by the town Select people. There may be a petition going around to restore the race.

The Cape Ann Rowing club does not have any further info yet.

It always was a great event and brought a lot of visitors to the town in May.

    thanks,

Thanks Paul!  I saw on facebook you were living now in Kittery.

Why not MA?  In reality, it is all about the $.  We couldn't afford the ocean front in MA or NH.  Werner's pretty adamant that the water needs to have salt in it:) We can't handle a condo and need space outside for both the dog and us.  All that ends up pushing us further Down East and into Maine.  I'm definitely open to suggestions.  Right now we are focusing on Harpswell.

You might get a nice property west of RT 95 in York County Maine for 650-850. Inventory is low.. Oceanside town but not on the water. Wells, Biddeford , York, Kittery

I love being so close to Portsmouth with all the nightlife and shopping.

  3. I was trying to message you but could not so here it is..

Welcome back to NE.. Suggestions for living...

I moved to Kittery last summer and love being back on the seacoast. Still have a working waterfront but a big noisy military presence. Lots of shopping and nightlife in Portsmouth and Kittery. We have two beaches in town and many launches in the area as you know. Big question is does the state matter?  Kittery and Eliot have some nice waterfront on the river, but the view can be industrial.  Dover NH has riverfront that is nice, but the property taxes are very high.

If going for a condo look at Badger's Island in Kittery? Just be careful because too close to the shipyard can be noisy at night. Portsmouth waterfront is very nice but 2.5 mil...If you can find it!

Bow Lake in Strafford NH is a very nice body of water and reasonably close to the seacoast.

    Why not Massachusetts?

  4. Uber would be just for me to get my car and then I would drive back to get my boat. Yes, the three- and six-mile races are loops. But that is just a sprint that would be over in no time. Too much driving for too much hassle right now.

Leon, I did my first race training around Cape Ann with you back in 99 and it was a great day. Enjoy South FLA, the inlets, warmth and out running gators...

  5. The First Frontier: The Forgotten History of Struggle, Savagery and Endurance in Early American by Scott Weidensaul.

I am only halfway through this but find it fascinating. It is an in-depth look and telling of the history of early New England and beyond. I always knew about some of the battles and struggles and this lays out the details. From Penobscot Bay to the Carribean he ties the economic, social, Euro Centric and Native elements together.

I met Scott when I did some work at his home in NH. He is a highly sought after lecturer, teacher and researcher on Ornithology.  He has published many books and travels extensively sharing his passion and knowledge.

He does a lot of work with the Audubon Society so if anyone here knows his work, please let me know. I plan to read one of his bird books in time.

  6. I am pulling this off the market. It is just worth more to me than the $600. price. I do have two Mill Creek kayaks by CLC. One is 16', double, open cockpit and needs paint. Well built, not heavy at all. I repaired a small hole when I bought it $300.

One is the 14' single, hatches, my build, BS 1088 marine ply, West epoxy and about 38#'s $550.

  7. Did it break while paddling or was it an accident? If an accident maybe it is repairable imo.

If it broke while paddling toss it and be done with it.

I have a Lendal CF shaft that broke on me. It is older and I figure it was fatigue and stress over time. I have worked with epoxy and carbon fiber on many kayaks and paddles, so I did a good repair and to my surprise it broke at the repair while rolling.

I could fix it but I would not trust it. IE: Do you use an insert dowel and then wrap with CF and epoxy? Do you just wrap with CF?

Does an insert make a hard spot that lets go first?

Would you be happy if it was fixed as a one piece?

Ya got me in the weeds....

  8. Ed is correct on things getting wet. Maybe time to re-think your plan? Why not put your tent in a drybag and let it sit lengthways down the hull between the pegs? With a short line and a small hole in the bulkhead you could secure it forward.

Maybe back the screw out just enough to allow the peg to slide by and then you can re-tighten in place and not lose the position? Alignment and starting the screw could be the pain. Rails are aluminum and could strip out with a misalignment.

  9. Why can't you just use the foot pegs and fit your gear between the pegs? I only use foot pegs and sometimes I will put water in front of the pegs with no problem. I assume you have the aluminum Yakima foot pegs?

FWIW I only use Yakima foot pegs and don't like squishy foam under my feet for the power transfer.

Agree that a state park is sounding bad. One other place I’ve launched that would be a possibility is Traip Academy. So long as school is out, there’s plenty of parking just up from the ramp. I wouldn’t use it when motor boats are likely to be launching or landing as the ramp is small and access to it is limited. But it’s easy to use even at low tide and had a clean porta potty with a welcome mat.

    Edit: changed link

Traip is a good option, but you have to know exactly what the current will be doing at any given hour. The back channel moves very fast and has some "interesting" areas that are not for newer paddlers at night.

  11. 20-8"'x 25" wide stitch and glue double kayak. BS 1088 marine ply and West System epoxy. About 70#'s. This is a very capable and faster sea kayak in the right hands. Hard chine and stable. Some usual scratches and it has been recoated with varnish since I built it. $600

  12. 1,  Usually crocs with old socks.

2, Often I stuff my dry suit in my boat overnight. It warms up quick enough when worn. I might lay it over my tent but occasionally will set a line.

3, Pocket rocket butane and I love it. Very small, light and adjustable. I mostly boil water.  You could make or buy an alcohol stove before the trip for very little effort.

Always have dry back up (nighttime) clothes. Having an Ikea bag for each hatch is nice.

    Matt,

Do you happen to know of anyone that is interested in selling their used small mid wing Epic paddle like around 209 length? I know folks use them long distance paddling  (water tribe) without shoulder issues.

    Thanks

    Karen

Also interested in your training sessions

Hi, I have an Epic mid wing and believe the length is adjustable. I have hardly used it because it just seems small for me and I would like to upgrade to a larger wing. I actually find my larger Lendal Nordkap faster. PM FMI
